FIBRE COLLECTION AND EXTRACTION

The processing of iraca palm fiber involves several steps that require great care to extract a high-quality material, ideal for creating refined artisanal products.

Harvesting the leaves: Young iraca palm leaves are harvested by hand, generally in the early morning to take advantage of nocturnal humidity. It is important to select leaves that are mature enough but still tender to obtain high-quality fibers.

Soaking: The harvested leaves are immersed in water for a few hours or even days, depending on local traditions, to soften the fibers and facilitate separation.

Fiber separation: After soaking, the leaves are manually processed to separate the thin fibers from the outer layer of the leaf. This process, called "raspado," requires great skill and precision to obtain long and uniform fibers.

Washing: The extracted fibers are carefully washed to remove any plant residues and impurities, thus improving their quality and consistency.

Drying: Once washed, the fibers are spread out in the sun to dry. Drying must be uniform to prevent the fibers from weakening or discoloring.

Bleaching (optional): If required, the fibers can be bleached through a natural process, often by exposing them to sun and humidity, or by using traditional techniques, to obtain a lighter shade.

Combing and selection: The dry fibers are combed to eliminate any knots and breaks. Subsequently, they are selected based on length and fineness, ready to be used by artisans.

The iraca palm is extensively present in most of Latin American territory; therefore, its processing into artisanal products is varied and can be found among different peoples, from the Caribbean to the Amazon and in the valleys of the Andean mountains.
