The Páramo is a unique ecosystem in the world, found in the Colombian Andes between 3,000 and 4,500 meters above sea level, almost always shrouded in fog. The absolute protagonists are the frailejones (Espeletia), endemic plants with a sculptural shape, with silvery and velvety leaves that capture moisture from the air and slowly release it into the soil. This extraordinary mechanism makes the Páramo one of the continent's main water reserves: it regulates the water cycle and feeds rivers and aqueducts that quench the thirst of millions of people. Despite occupying less than 1% of the Earth's surface, it hosts exceptional biodiversity and is considered one of the ecosystems most vulnerable to climate change: it is a fragile treasure, to be understood and protected.
